Crumlin Together was established in 2002 as part of a broader initiative involving several sister projects in Ulster and the Border Counties of Ireland. The scheme is called Communities in Transition, a project supported by the International Fund for Ireland. The overall aims and objectives of the scheme are to improve towns and villages deemed as areas of weak community infrastructure.

As Crumlin is noted as one of the fasted growing populations in Ireland and possibly Europe (800% increase in the last ten years) it was therefore identified by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland as meeting the need for an innovative project such as this.

It is only recently that we in Crumlin Together sat down to look at our five-year action plan again and to re-evaluate the priorities listed.

It was to our surprise that we discovered what we have achieved to date. We have supported and established new groups such as Women in Touch and the Festival Group. We have established Main Street premises that are open to all. We have brought into Crumlin statutory bodies that found it difficult to establish themselves in our village. We have highlighted social need and helped the foreign nationals who have established themselves in Crumlin. We have highlighted planning irregularities and have organised the Crumlin Against Asbestos Campaign, culminating in the establishment of a focused and highly motivated committee. We have organised youth activities in conjunction with the Local Education and Library Board and offer our premises for a range of activities that would not be happening without our support.

Although we have achieved much we have much left to do. We are at an advanced stage in bringing major funding to Crumlin to help our long-term sustainability; we are aware we need new premises to allow access to those with disabilities or cannot manage stairs. We need to have a stronger youth focus and ensure our children have an alternative to walking the streets and we need to tackle the lack of proper investment in the social infrastructure of Crumlin.

It is also important to note that most of the actions and activities are organised and managed by unpaid voluntary members of our community who only as reward your support and enjoyment of what is available. So please support these activities as much as you can and if you have an hour or so a week to help make the positive difference we will be glad to hear from you.
